We left Berthoud, CO at 7:23AM. It was sunny and 78 degrees already. We made our way to the I-70 East where the GPS told us to continue for 528 miles!
We made our first stop in Limon, CO to fill up on gas. Regular gas is only $2.89 here.
About 35 miles into Kansas, the time zone changes from Mountain to Central time. 101 of Kansas’ counties are in Central time. Just Sherman, Wallace, Greeley, and Hamilton counties (which border Colorado) are on Mountain time. The highest point in Kansas is Mt. Sunflower (4,039 ft) and in the Mountain time zone. People say that Kansas is so flat, but actually it slopes down towards the East. The elevation of KC is 900 ft.
We saw a sign for A&W Root Beer, so exited at Russell, KS for a quick break and a root beer float. We stopped for our last gas fill up for the day at a Love’s truck stop in Abilene , KS, paying $3.10 for premium gas.
We arrived at Rob and Nancy Dean’s home in Lees Summit, MO. at about 6:45 PM. A delightful couple, friends of Mary Ann, welcomed us in and fed us a delicious meal of chicken fettuccine, salad (greens from their garden) and bread. We enjoyed visiting with them, Mary Ann catching up and Liz and I getting to know them. Felt like we were all old friends by the time we called it a night.
Tomorrow we will start riding the KATY Trail. There is a good summary in our ride website (www.bikeforthecure.org) under the tab “Bike for the Cure 2025 – June 20-26.
